Patrouille des Glaciers
Patrouille des Glaciers
JEANRICHARD has shown its determination to conquer the highest peaks by becoming the partner watchmaker and official timekeeper to the Patrouille des Glaciers (PDG), the famous international ski mountaineering race that has become an established tradition in the Swiss Alps. It is a concentrated combination of athletic performance, endurance and team spirit.
The Patrouille des Glaciers race was created by the Swiss Army in 1943 to test the abilities of its special mountain patrol units in extreme conditions. After an interruption of nearly 25 years, the event was relaunched in 1984 on a biannual basis and with civilians also being allowed to take part. The race takes place along the "high route" running between Alpine peaks in the southern part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland. There are two different routes: the Zermatt-Arolla-Verbier course (course Z, 53 kilometres in length, but equivalent to 110 kilometres in terms of effort, due to an altitude difference of +3994 metres and –4090 metres) and a shorter Arolla-Verbier course (course A, 26 kilometres in length, equivalent to 53 kilometres of effort, with an altitude difference of +1881 metres and –2341 metres). This legendary race has become world-famous over the years and attracts more and more competitors each time it is held, not to mention the tens of thousands of spectators who turn out to witness the participants' exploits.
The same thirst for achievement
The Patrouille des Glaciers, which takes place once every two years, involves 4500 participants from around the world– both military and civilian – who compete in teams of three. Besides their outstanding physical fitness and exceptional resistance to the extremes of high altitude, these "everyday heroes" stand out for their love of challenge, team spirit, respect for nature and desire to push back the frontiers of the possible. Values such as these are also firmly at the heart of the JEANRICHARD way of life, and make for a promising partnership.
